Schumacher Farm Park (Hwy 19 Waunakee)

Sunday, February 19 from 2-4 pm

Want to try snowshoeing but don’t have snowshoes? Then this workshop is for you. Learn how to snowshoe at this FREE (donations accepted) family friendly event.

Representatives from Fontana Sports will teach basic snowshoe skills and provide tips on what to wear. Snowshoes will be provided or you can bring your own. Members of the Madison Area Outdoor Meetup Group will also assist and lead short hikes on the prairie. Afterwards, warm up with hot chocolate around the bonfire.

Everyone is welcome to enjoy the trails, whether attending the workshop or not.

Schumacher Farm Park is a 100 acre open-air museum and conservancy dedicated to preserving old-time rural farm ways of the 1920s and 1930s. It is run by the Friends of Schumacher Farm Park in cooperation with Dane County Parks and the Marcella Pendall Schumacher Trust.

Parfrey's Glen

It has been awhile since I have been to Parfrey's Glen State Natural Area as it was closed for the summer and into the fall after being washed out by flooding. I'm happy to announce that it had reopened and in my opinion is better than ever. The boardwalk that previously was the trail through the gorge is gone leaving hikers to their own devises for stream crossings and scrambling over rocks. I definitely recommend waterproof boots and trekking poles, especially this time of year when the rocks have snow and ice on them. The slick and rugged trail rewards you with spectacular with views through a narrow rocky ravine, with a stream running through the base.

It is located on County DL (off of 113 in Merrimac) just a few miles from Devil's Lake State Park.

I also recommend a stop at Wollersheim Winery in Prairie du Sac on the way home!

Trout Unlimited Icebreaker Event

The Southern Wisconsin Chapter of Trout Unlimited will be holding their annual Icebreaker event on Saturday January 14th. Fontana Sports Manager/Fly Fishing Guru Craig Amaker will be presenting from 9:30-10:30am:

“Fly Fishing Southern Wisconsin”

The talk will cover all the fly fishing opportunities in the area. From trout on our spring creeks, to small mouth bass and other warm water species on the Wisconsin River, and salmon and steelhead/lake-run brown trout on the Lake Michigan tributaries. Proceeds from the event support the Southern Wisconsin Chapter of Trout Unlimited, and help pay for stream restoration and purchase conservation easements in southern Wisconsin.

In addition to Craig's talk there will be other speakers, door prizes, raffles, fly tying demonstrations, entomology demonstration, and a kids room. Doors open at 8:30 am.

The event will be held at the Promega Biotechnology Center, 5445 East Cheryl Parkway, Fitchburg.

CHEERS TO 2012!

Anyone have a new years resolution to be more active or get in better shape? Think about picking up a new outdoor sport!

Running is easy, fun,and doesn't require the snow that seems to be eluding us so far this winter. We have many seasoned runners at Fontana that can help you pick out clothing and footwear, talk about training, and share experiences.

Cross Country Skiing is a fantastic low impact activity that is also a great workout. Although we don't have snow yet there is plenty of winter left. We an help pick out the perfect skis for you as well as point you to the best trails in the area.

Nordic Walking is not that well known but awesome exercise. Simply put, it is walking with poles and can burn up to 40% more calories that just going for a walk. Stop in and find out more.

Hiking/Walking is the most accessible of all activities. We are lucky to be in an area with many beautiful parks very close. Devils Lake, Indian Lake, Blue Mounds, Governor Nelson, Governor Dodge, or simply the lake shores of Madison.

The North Face - Technology Summit

Last week I had the opportunity to head to Chicago to The North Face's technology summit. This was an event to introduce some exciting new technologies that will be coming out in the Fall 2012 line.

The great thing about The North Face is that they have an amazing team of athletes who are constantly pushing the limits of their gear then coming back to the design team and asking for something better.

Mountaineer Conrad Anker was on hand (fresh from Himalayan triumph) to give a talk about his time on Meru, an extremely remote peak in the Garhwal Himalayas of India. In 2008 Anker, Jimmy Chin, and Renan Ozturk visited Meru but were force to turn back 100 meters short of the summit after 19 gruelling days of punishing weather conditions and technical terrain. Based on the feedback The North Face received from these three athletes they produced a line of gear called the "Meru Kit" using new and innovative technologies to make a lightweight warm, durable layering system to keep the athletes warm and dry from base layer to shell. In their new "kit" Anker, Chin, and Ozturk returned to Meru and successfully summited the "sharks fin" on October 12th, 2011.

Some of the new gear to keep an eye out for are:
"Flashdry" baselayers and jackets which disperse moisture and dry faster than any comparable product on the market.
"Thermoball" Jackets - a new innovation in synthetic insulation where instead of continuous filaments, clusters of small balls of insulation mimic the clusters of down outperforming the warmth to weight ratio of PrimaLoft.
"Shaffle Jacket" - an extremely lightweight down jacket with innovative baffling and thermo mapping to maximize warmth and flexibility.
ABS Backpacks - Ski/Snowboarding backcountry packs with built in ABS avalanche airbag system.

Bottom line, there is always a lot to look forward to in this awesome, ever evolving industry.

Dean Karnazes - Life in Motion

We are excited to announce that Ultramararthon runner Dean Karnazes will be our guest athlete/speaker this year! Dean has been dubbed "The Ultramarathon Man" and is ranked among TIME magazine's 100 most influential people in the world. His feat of running 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days can only be described as "superhuman." Dean's message to us all is "get of the couch, get healthy, hit the trails, and go the extra mile." With that mantra in mind, and with physiology adapted for endless running, he has run 350 miles nonstop, and completed ultramarathons across the world's five greatest deserts: the Atacama, Gobi, Death Valley, Sahara, and Antarctic. Token Creek Conservancy Work Day

Below is a letter sent to Jutith Hutchinson. Thanks to Judith and and to Troup 333 for your hard work in keeping Token Creek beautiful and healthy!

Despite the weather, off and on light rain, many boys and parents, and 1 sister, from Troop 333 participated in today's conservation workday held at the Elmer and Edna Culver Conservancy grounds off Egre road.

The volunteers began their work around 9:00 am today and vigorously pruned numerous tag elders and buckhorn tree shoots. The work safely accomplished today by the volunteers will help the conservancy continue their ongoing work next spring on the natural prairie grounds section of the conservancy.

Upon completing our task, we enjoyed some donuts and a tour of the conservancy grounds and viewed up-close the springs on the property. This tour was lead by the passionate Judith Hutchinson, Token Creek Conservancy Chair and work coordinator for today's project. We learned about the importance of Token Creek to:
Maintaining clean and high quality water,
Supplying a large volume of water to the Madison chain of lakes,
Wildlife such as birds, fish, deer, foxes, and other mammals,
Establishing for the conservancy for people to enjoy the outdoors.
Finally, a big THANK YOU to Judith Hutchinson. I know you took precious time away from your husband and your business, Fontana Sports Specialties, to be there for the scouts today. Thank you for sharing your love for scouting, nature, and the conservancy with us all-you clearly have a passion for all three. Also, thank you for taking the time to help bring today's event together. THANK YOU again.

Clayton Daughtenbaugh is the Midwest Regional Organizer for the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance. He will be presenting a slideshow documenting citizen efforts to designate public lands in southern Utah's spectacular canyon country as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System.

This 15-minute journey through red rock splendor invigorates and motivates viewers to participate in the movement to protect these unique lands. It will be shown in conjunction with a presentation on the current status of the Utah wilderness movement

"These are spectacular public lands owned by all Americans. As citizens we have a great opportunity to act to protect these special places," says Daughenbaugh. Daughenbaugh is also the Chair of the Sierra Club's National Wildlands Committee and author of "Common Sense Democracy: How to Complete the American Revolution in Your Neighborhood.

The four corners of Southwestern Utah contain many canyons, ancient Indian ruins and wonderful wilderness for day hiking and backpacking. See a photo presentation of some of the cultural resources that are still preserved after 900 to 1500 years and hear of the wilderness areas that house them, awaiting your exploration. Over the past 14 years, Brad has volunteered on many archaeological projects with the Park Service, Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management in an effort to continue to protect these treasures and will share some of his experiences at these wonderful sites.

Ridiculous Word...Excellent Concept

GLAMPING.

Glamorous camping, or luxury camping.

I'm generally not at all a fan of blending words to create a cutesy catchword (I still cringe at the mention of staycations) however, I can't deny the appeal of the concept.

Don't get me wrong, I have done my share of grungy, 20 days in the back country, in the hot sun, schlepping a pack and not showering. And I have loved every moment of it! But sometimes you don't want to have to search out the softest leaves to use in the lavatory. Sometimes it's nice to enjoy the beauty of nature in relative comfort.

Despite argument from some "hard core" outdoors men and women, there is nothing wrong with using a cushy queen sized air mattress in an open airy tent. Donning your stylish but functional Icebreaker tank and Mountain Hardwear skirt, going for a walk by the lake then finding a quaint restaurant to enjoy a sunset and a glass of wine.

Olympic Fever

I love the Olympics! I can't get enough, I will be stumbling around the shop sleep deprived for the next 2 weeks because I am not able to shut off the TV at night.

As a child I always wanted to be a figure skater. After watching hours of skating would I prance around the house doing "triple axles" and skating across the wood floors. Unfortunately the dream never came to fruition because every time I put on skates there was an intense magnetic connection between the ground and my rear. Seriously, physicists should study it.

Lately the sport that draws me is snowboarding; half pipe, snowboard cross, anything, it all looks amazing! Alas the same phenomenon occurs when I strap on a snowboard. Looks like my Olympic participation will be limited to spectating...

We do have some Olympic ties here at Fontana however. Ethiopian cross country skier Robel Teklemariam is a former employee. He is competing in his second Olympics as the sole member of the Ethiopian Olympic team. We wish him the best of luck! For more info on Robel check out the link below.

National Trails Day

It's a little known "holiday" but here at Fontana we think it's an important one!

Every year the first Saturday in June is National Trails Day. It is a day organized by the American Hiking Society to recognize and celebrate America's trail system. Everyone is encouraged to seek out, learn about, and enjoy trails in his or her area. With over 200,000 miles of trails in the US we have a lot to enjoy!

It is also a day to step back and recognize the many hours of labor, planning, and fund raising it takes to develop and maintain trails.

CELEBRATE National Trails Day with FONTANA!

On June 6th from 9 am to noon volunteer your time and help us clear invasive species from along the Capitol City Bike Trail. Your work will help provide clear and open vistas for all trail users.

We will meet at Lussier Family Heritage Center, 301 Lake Farm Rd, Madison, WI 53711.

1 p.m. -How to camp in comfort- Explain how tents are made. How they have changed over the years. Discuss the benefits of a sleeping pad particularly coupled with the new sheet and comforter. Differences between 4 season and 3 season tent and why it is important to apply knowledge to planned adventure. Stoves, how to cook outside.

2 p.m. – Climbing at devils lake. How to get started. -I know you are a rock star and it would be a huge help if you could discuss how to get started climbing at Devils Lake. Equipment needed. Guide books and how to read them. Where to camp. Maybe a slide show of pictures of climbing there.

3 p.m. – Trekking Poles- Will it really help me on the trail? Benefits and uses of trekking poles. Not only will it help on the trail, but use this to transition into Nordic walking and an everyday application.

3:30 p.m. - LED headlamps- Are they as good as everyone says? YES! What is bulb life, battery time. How bright are they, how have they advanced over the past four years, etc.

4 p.m. – The amazing Jet Boil! Light weight cooking - What needs to be said here. Uh? The thing is amazing. Let’s let everyone know. We should make afternoon tea for everyone with it too!

In addition to giving the clinics our manufacturers reps will be on hand to answer any questions you have.

Today is John Muir's birthday. I took a few moments today in between my classes to go visit his wooden clock which is on exhibit in the State Historical building on campus. (The State Historical Society is an amazing - and dare I say, secret - place on campus with one of the most spectacular libraries and reading rooms; I love the beautiful old building - and not just because I'm a history major) Anyway, if you ever get the chance to stop in and check out the small Muir exhibit, it really is worth it.

Muir isn't most well-known for his clocks, as amazing as they are. Most know Muir for his unmatched influence within the early American conservation movement; his conservation legacy lives on today in the Sierra Club and in the hearts of many Americans who have a passion for the outdoors and for protecting America's beautiful wild places.

Wisconsin is proud to claim Muir as a native: a Scottish immigrant whose parents settled near Portage, Muir spent his childhood playing in the roaming creeks and wooded hills of the central part of the state. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison (which has since named the wooded knoll just up the road from College Library "Muir Woods" in his memory), taking an unusual combination of classes, and excelling in botany and geology. Muir never graduated, and left school to travel to Canada, where he worked on and off and spent his free time wandering the natural landscapes of the north.

Though nature played an important role in young Muir's life, it wasn't until a factory accident temporarily blinded him at 29 years old that he truly realized how much he valued the natural world. Afraid that he had taken nature's beauty for granted, Muir set out on a hike from Indiana to Florida after his recovery. In September 1867, Muir set out for Florida by the "wildest, leafiest, and least trodden way I could find."

Muir's wanderings eventually brought him to Yosemite Valley, where he found what he called "the grandest of all temples of Nature". As Muir spent more time in Yosemite, he drew upon his education, which he mixed with his passion for nature, to study the area. His background with geology at UW-Madison aided him in developing a theory about the glacial formation of the Valley - an extremely advanced notion for the time. Muir settled in the Valley, and eventually he and a colleague and fellow alpinist formed the Sierra Club in 1892. The Sierra Club played an important role locally at first, by helping protect the Yosemite Valley and eventually helping to establish Yosemite as a National Park under the control of the Federal Government. The Sierra Club eventually expanded nationwide, and is known as America's earliest grassroots environmental organization.

Muir's role as the first President of the Sierra Club as well as his activist approach to the protection and conservation of Yosemite earned him nationwide recognition. President Theodore Roosevelt was impressed by Muir's vision and passion for the wilderness, and Muir even escorted Roosevelt on a backcountry tour of the park. Eventually, this close relationship helped Muir to convince Roosevelt that Yosemite needed the authority of federal government to continue to protect it.

...

So why, then, does Muir's legacy affect us here in Wisconsin? It might seem that Muir completely forgot about his home state after being swept off of his feet by the California wilderness. It was, after all, Wisconsin's natural beauty that helped foster Muir's passion for the outdoors. Though Muir concentrated most of his personal conservation efforts in Yosemite, his legacy of conservation continues throughout the nation, providing us Midwesterners (and everyone else, for that matter) with beautiful wild spaces to explore. I encourage you to check out the Sierra Club website and see if it is an organization that you are interested in supporting.

In the meantime, stop in and talk to us about new ways to get out and enjoy the wild places that Muir helped protect! We're constantly receiving shipments of new spring gear and clothing (I am particularly excited by the huge Black Diamond order that just came in - our climbing department is stocked to the brim). Plus, a lot of us employees have been spending our spare time out and about in the area, and can offer some great advice and ideas about trips and ways to get outside - it's supposed to be beautiful out this weekend!

Also, don't miss our upcoming events this weekend - there's a Chaco Arbor Day promotion (Buy One, Get One Tree) and a Preferred Customer Party (complete with live music, a beer tasting by Capitol Brewery, and ridiculous discounts and specials).

For now, I should probably stop writing about the history of Muir and start thinking about the papers I have due in my classes...oh, if only every class could be an environmental history class!

I've driven through Nebraska at least 14 times now. If you are unaware, the welcome sign boasts "Home of Arbor Day." This has always struck me as a little odd due to the apparent lack of trees in this plains state. Since Arbor day is imminent and here at Fontana we are doing a promotion, I thought there would be no better time to educate myself on the origin of Arbor day.

So, this is what I dug up...

Arbor Day was the vision of journalist/politician Julius Sterling Morton, who thought Nebraska's landscape and could benefit from the wide scale planting of trees. He was able to put his vision into action when he joined the Nebraska board of agriculture. The idea was well received, and thus April 10, 1872 became the 1st ever Arbor day. It was a huge success with over 1 million trees being planted in Nebraska. A second one took place six years later in 1884, and in 1885 Arbor Day became a legal holiday in Nebraska, the date was set as April 22nd to coincide with Morton's birthday. Since planting trees is and AWESOME idea, Arbor day was soon embraced by other states. Kansas, Tennessee, Minnesota, and Ohio were among the first on board, but eventually all 50 states had their own Arbor day...the dates varied a bit based on climate but the premise was the same.
Finally in 1970 Nixon formally declared Arbor day a federal holiday - setting the date at the third Friday in April.

So that's the quick rundown...and since we think it's great, this year we'll be teaming up with Chaco and the National Arbor Day Foundation for a BUY ONE GET ONE TREE promotion.

For every pair of Chacos purchased at either of our stores or at fontanasports.com April 24th, 25th, and 26th we will plant a tree in one of our national forests! So get new kicks and do some good for the earth!

Fly Fishing Rendezvous Sat April 18th!

For the 3rd year now our west side location's assistant manager, and fly fishing guru, Craig Amacker has organized an EXCELLENT day of events and seminars to celebrate the sport of fly fishing. Here's the rundown:

The event takes place on Saturday April 18th, at Fontana's west side store, (7948 Tree Lane, Madison) lasts from 10 am to 6 pm, and is FREE.

SCHEDULE

10 - 11: Dane County Trout Stream Easements
Presenter: Topf Wells

11 - Noon: Fly fishing Wisconsin spring creeks
Presenter: Jim Bartelt

Noon - 1:30: Fly casting for Wisconsin spring creeks instruction
Presenter Jim Bartelt

1:30 - 2:30: Trout fishing Bernie, British Columbia
Presenter: Bob Harrison

2:30 - 3:30: Fly Casting Challenge! Distance and accuracy on 4 targets. Prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

3:30 - 4:30: Invasive species presentation. How to identify, prevent the spread, and keep them off your wading gear.
Presenter: Laura Breckenridge of the Wisconsin River Alliance

4:30 - 6: Happy hour featuring Redwood Creek wine, appetizers, and a showing of "Red Gold." A documentary on the Bristol Bay pebble mine.

In addition Tom Anderson, sales rep for Sage, Simms, and Rio will be on hand all day to answer questions and show the latest and greatest in gear. He'll also have the casting analyzer on hand to show us all how we can improve out casts.

The Wisconsin Chapter of Trout Unlimited will have an informational booth set up. Anyone who makes a donation of $25 or more to TUDARE (Trout Unlimited Driftless Area Restoration Effort) will receive a free Patagonia Trout Unlimited shirt.

We are excited to have several other non-profit organizations join us for the event. These groups will have informational booths set up: Federation of Fly Fishers, Wisconsin River Alliance, Dane County Parks, DNR Fisheries, and Dane County Natural Heritage Land Trust.
