Black Earth Creek Trout Shocking

Tuesday, April 2, 2013 the Wisconsin DNR conducted shocking on Black Earth Creek.  These pictures were taken near South Valley Road between Cross Plains and Black Earth by Fontana Sports President and Fly Fishing Addict, John Hutchinson.  The shocking is done to get a size count and density count of fish.  The results look like a medium density of rainbow and brown trout for 2013!  Hopefully the water levels will hold after a long runoff!

Launch Party at Fontana Sports!

University of Wisconsin Press - Publishing for Wisconsin, Publishing for the World since 1936
Join Kevin Searock for the launch of his
new book,
Troutsmith!

WHEN: Thursday, March 28 at 4:00PM
231 Junction Road, Madison, WI

Kevin Searock transports readers to the waterside as he
explores the timeless relationship between the outdoors
and the sport of fishing.

Whether standing in a quiet Wisconsin creek, by a high-country
lake in Wyoming, or on the grassy margins of England’s hallowed
chalkstreams, Kevin Searock believes anglers are driven by a
vision: “There are things on this good Earth that only the angler
sees, and one of them is the breathless beauty of a trout
emerging from a river.” Here, in this evocative collection of fishing
essays, he takes readers under the surface of this ancient sport,
casting a spell of water-magic. Although trout are central to many
of the stories, bluegills, bass, and other warm-water fish also
grace these pages.

We all, if we are lucky, find ways of loving the world. Fishing
is how Kevin Searock loves the world. These essays, like all
good love stories, are windows into a strange and obsessive
heart. Searock’s fishing illuminates our land and waters and the
nature and mystery of how we love. "
~David Allan Cates, author of Freeman Walker

Kevin Searock is an avid fisherman, photographer,
and outdoors writer whose articles have appeared
in Gray’s Sporting Journal, Midwest Fly Fishing,

6th Annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival

Hi Friends,

I'm taking a quick minute to invite you to join us, John, Elizabeth and I, with Fontana Sports Specialties, for a special night. We, Fontana Sports, have sponsored this annual  film fest for years because we feel it's important to bring this event to Madison. Each year the attendance is good and the event receives lots of positive spin off conversations and actions as a result of the program.

There are 14  short films, the winners of international film contests. Some will be animations, others will take you all over the world. It's informative, exciting, beautiful photography, and thought provoking! Much will be informative of ways we can make a difference just by being aware when the subjects of climate, locations, and scientific topics arise. Please join us.

At a time when money is short, sales soft, and seasons unpredictable, John and I still choose to spend $1,000.00 to bring this to our community. Together, we must be aware, active, and this is our way to help inform and support these efforts. ALL Proceeds go to River Alliance of Wisconsin. A ticket can be purchased at either Fontana Sports, the Barrymore Theatre, or Frugal Muse Bookstore.

Thank you, and I hope you can join us. It’s a special night during the intermission there is beer, wine or soda available, as well as popcorn, while we meet and catch up, as well as discuss the films.

Judith Hutchinson
Fontana Sports Specialties V.P.

There will be a drawing for a $50.00 Fontana Sports Specialties Gift Card during intermission. Good luck to all who attend

Ski and Snowboard Resale!

Sunday, October 28th, Fontana led the charge to Tyrol Basin’s Ski and Snowboard Resale! The day was beautiful. Frost covered pine trees, fresh man-made snow for the snowboarders and skiers, blue skies, and 15% of sales went to support Tyrol Basin’s National Ski Patrol!

The huge canopies sheltered the truck loads of colorful downhill and x-country skis, snowboards, boots, poles, and bindings. Another station was set up with underwear, ski coats, sweaters, and ski pants, while the porch was lined with adult and children’s ski helmets. Inside the tables were filled with ski accessories: goggles, gloves, mittens, and hats, to mention a few of the items.

Fontana Sport Specialties supports Madison’s communities, the  ski patrol, and the family friendly Tyrol Basin with knowledge, great winter products, and friendly service.

Watch for future Fontana events!

Warren Miller - Flow State

Last week we sponsored the premiere of Warren Miller’s 2012 film Flow State. Fontana Sports has been sponsoring this film coming to Madison for as long as I can remember, which is 15+ years. We all look forward to the event because we know when we walk towards the Barrymore Theatre’s front doors we will see a line of people waiting outside, usually in the cold, for their tickets and they don’t mind… they can’t wait to see what Warren Miller’s new film will be this year. Once inside the front doors there are hundreds of people happy to be in the presence of other fellow snow lovers. You can feel that everyone’s been waiting to start the winter off by seeing the new Warren Miller film celebrating what we all love the most – fresh white snow powder!

People mingle, grab a beer and check out what the vendors have brought to hand out and give away this year. Lots of Midwest ski hills(Lutsen Mountains, Granite Peak, Indianhead) are there as well as some national sponsors and our booth of course. We had some great stuff to hand out this year, my favorite being the Salomon Magic Eight balls. When the shows about to start everyone grabs their seats with a beer and maybe some popcorn, but definitely with a smile. The MC gets everyone pumped up about the coming winter, the huge drawing during intermission and the sweet film that’s in store. And then it begins! The films always have a way of drawing you in with the beautiful camera work, incredible athletes and the sick tunes. When you walk out after the film, you can feel everyone is hoping there will be snow waiting for us outside the Barrymore’s front doors. In some past years there actually has been! If you didn’t get to make the premiere this year, we hope you’ll join us next year and then we know you’ll be hooked, just like we are!

Dawn Glanc - Montenegro Rock Climbing Adventures

The Madison climbing community is lucky enough to be getting a world class climber coming to Boulders Climbing Gym to share her experiences. Dawn Glanc is a sponsored rock and ice climber.  She travels the world in pursuit of climbing.  She is an AMGA certified rock and alpine guide, guiding for San Juan mountain guides, Chicks Climbing, and Chicks Rock!

On Thursday, July 26th, 8:00 PM at Boulders Climbing Gym (3964 Commercial Ave, Madison, WI 53714) Dawn will be presenting: Montenegro Rock Climbing Adventures

In October of 2010 Dawn Glanc and two other American climbers traveled to Montenegro, a small country in Southeastern Europe to climb. The name Montenegro literally translates to "black mountain" which is very descriptive of the country that is bordered by the Adriatic Sea to the southwest, but has only a very narrow coastal plain (only one to four miles wide) before hitting the various ranges, considered by some to be the most rugged terrain in Europe.  Dawn and her companions were the first American party to climb in Montenegro and were accompanied by a local team of eight climbers.  The local climbers' knowledge and experience helped the team put up multiple first ascents.

Dawn will be presenting a slide show that tells the story of this expedition between two cultures that was made successful through a genuine shared love of rock climbing.

Parfrey's Glen

It has been awhile since I have been to Parfrey's Glen State Natural Area as it was closed for the summer and into the fall after being washed out by flooding.  I'm happy to announce that it had reopened and in my opinion is better than ever.  The boardwalk that previously was the trail through the gorge is gone leaving hikers to their own devises for stream crossings and scrambling over rocks. I definitely recommend waterproof boots and trekking poles, especially this time of year when the rocks have snow and ice on them.  The slick and rugged trail rewards you with spectacular with views through a narrow rocky ravine, with a stream running through the base.

It is located on County DL (off of 113 in Merrimac) just a few miles from Devil's Lake State Park.

I also recommend a stop at Wollersheim Winery in Prairie du Sac on the way home!

Since pictures always tell a better story here are a few.

Watercress was abundant in the slower
moving offshoots of the stream.

Spectacular ice formations in the water.

View of the glen...the little red dot is my friend Em.

End of the trail.

New Years Resolutions

CHEERS TO 2012!

Anyone have a new years resolution to be more active or get in better shape?  Think about picking up a new outdoor sport!

Running is easy, fun,and doesn't require the snow that seems to be eluding us so far this winter.  We have many seasoned runners at Fontana that can help you pick out clothing and footwear, talk about training, and share experiences.

Cross Country Skiing is a fantastic low impact activity that is also a great workout.  Although we don't have snow yet there is plenty of winter left.  We an help pick out the perfect skis for you as well as point you to the best trails in the area.

Nordic Walking is not that well known but awesome exercise.  Simply put, it is walking with poles and can burn up to 40% more calories that just going for a walk.  Stop in and find out more.

Hiking/Walking is the most accessible of all activities.  We are lucky to be in an area with many beautiful parks very close.  Devils Lake, Indian Lake, Blue Mounds, Governor Nelson, Governor Dodge, or simply the lake shores of Madison.

Whatever you need to stay more active this year: pedometers, watches, clothing and gear, information, or motivation stop in Fontana and let our staff help you with your goals!  We wish you a happy, healthy new year!

Also a big shout out to Fontana Sports owner Judith Hutchinson.  It was an early resolution but she completed her first 5K this year running the Thanksgiving Berbee Derby in under 40 minutes!  Way to go Judith!

The North Face - Technology Summit

Last week I had the opportunity to head to Chicago to The North Face's technology summit.  This was an event to introduce some exciting new technologies that will be coming out in the Fall 2012 line.

The great thing about The North Face is that they have an amazing team of athletes who are constantly pushing the limits of their gear then coming back to the design team and asking for something better.

Mountaineer Conrad Anker was on hand (fresh from Himalayan triumph) to give a talk about his time on Meru, an extremely remote peak in the Garhwal Himalayas of India.   In 2008 Anker, Jimmy Chin, and Renan Ozturk visited Meru but were force to turn back 100 meters short of the summit after 19 gruelling days of punishing weather conditions and technical terrain.  Based on the feedback The North Face received from these three athletes they produced a line of gear called the "Meru Kit" using new and innovative technologies to make a lightweight warm, durable layering system to keep the athletes warm and dry from base layer to shell.  In their new "kit" Anker, Chin, and Ozturk returned to Meru and successfully summited the "sharks fin" on October 12th, 2011.

Some of the new gear to keep an eye out for are:
"Flashdry" baselayers and jackets which disperse moisture and dry faster than any comparable product on the market.
"Thermoball" Jackets - a new innovation in synthetic insulation where instead of continuous filaments, clusters of small balls of insulation mimic the clusters of down outperforming the warmth to weight ratio of PrimaLoft.
"Shaffle Jacket" - an extremely lightweight down jacket with innovative baffling and thermo mapping to maximize warmth and flexibility.
ABS Backpacks - Ski/Snowboarding backcountry packs with built in ABS avalanche airbag system.

Bottom line, there is always a lot to look forward to in this awesome, ever evolving industry.

Left to Right Chin, Anker, and Ozturk on the Summit of Meru.  The orange jacket is the Shaffle Jacket, I got to try on the one Anker is wearing in the photo...pretty Awesome!

...Like There's No Tomorrow

One Night Only!
Barrymore Theatre
 Thursday, October 27, 7:30 PM
$19

"The pressure's off. No one's watching. It's just you, your boards, and the mountain. The weather has broken and the snow is untracked. The only sound is that of your breath crystalizing in the winter air. There's only one place to go, but there's an infinite number of ways to get there. Adjust your gear, take a deep breath, and . . . like there’s no tomorrow.

For the sixty second year in a row, Warren Miller Entertainment brings you to this moment, and each moment that follows, from peaks as far flung as India and as nearby as New Hampshire. The common themes are snow, steeps, and the skiers and snowboarders who throw themselves into both with an abandon that amazes and inspires us all.

. . . Like There’s No Tomorrow is a celebration of these moments, the ones that make up the winter for people who live for it. Join Chris Davenport, Daron Rahlves, Colby West, Andy Mahre, Seth Wescott, Julia Mancuso, and more as they drop into the runs we see in our dreams as we wait for the seasons to change.

Hosted by Jonny Moseley and shot on location in Colorado, Utah, California, New Zealand, Chile, Alaska and British Columbia, . . . Like There’s No Tomorrow is your annual reminder that Winter is on its way and, with it, months of an adrenaline-fueled dance with gravity. Welcome it with everything you've got, because there's always a tomorrow, but only so many dawn with fresh snow. So what are you waiting for? Drop in ..."
